New Jersey: S. 3061 Prevention of Illegal Trade in Tigers; Requirements for Possession (New Jersey)

Bill description: This bill would require individuals to register and microchip any tiger they possess and establishes a state tiger registration and accounting system as well as methods of disposal to prevent the illegal trade of tigers and their parts.

California: (Updated) AB 376 Would Ban Shark Finning

Update (June 29, 2011): This bill passed the Senate Natural Resources Committee with a vote 5-0 (and two abstentions). The bill has been re-referred to the Senate Committee on Appropriations. A provision has been added that some type of amendment be incorporated to allow the possibility of some shark fin from “sustainable” sources. California residents are encouraged to contact their state senator to urge support on this bill.

Oregon: Victory in Oregon! HB 2838 Bans Shark Finning

Update (June 2011): This bill was signed into law by Governor John Kitzhaber on June 16, 2011.
The new law bans the sale, trade, possession and distribution of shark fins, but reflects amendments made to the bill to exempt the following: 1) fins legally take from spiny dogfish; and (2) "sport" fishermen and fish processors with valid licenses.

New York: Poised for Victory! N.Y. Governor Presented with Bear Bill

Update (June 2011): The New York Legislature has officially passed our bear gallbladder/bile trade bill, and it is now on its way Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo's desk for his signature.

Bill description: Born Free USA helped draft this bill. It will prohibit the possession, sale, barter, offer, purchase, transportation, delivery, or receipt of bear gallbladder bile, or any product, item, or
substance containing, or labeled or advertised as containing, bear gallbladders or bile.

Nevada: (Updated) AB 403 Would Make Bear Hunt Permanent

Update (September 2011): State wildlife commissions voted 8-0 at a meeting in Reno to continue Nevada's first ever bear hunt again next year and every year after that from Aug. 20 to Dec. 31.

Update (June 2011): This bill did not pass. The Legislature adjourned has adjourned without reaching a Senate vote on this issue.

Bill description: Section 1.1 (c) of this bill will make the proposed black bear hunt (Aug. 20-Dec. 31) permanent.

Washington: Victory! SB 5688 Bans Shark Finning

Update (May 12, 2011): The bill was signed into law today!

Bill description: SB 5688 would make it a gross misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail and/or a $5,000 fine to offer, buy, sell a shark fin or shark fin derivative, or to prepare or process a shark fin or derivative for consumption. Violation of the proposed law would also trigger a one-year suspension of commercial fishing privileges.
