Louisiana Residents: Speak Up AGAIN for Tony the Truck Stop Tiger--Urgently!

Published 06/04/14

S.B. 250 is a devastating bill that has now passed both the House and the Senate in Louisiana. However, you can still help prevent it from becoming law.

Truck stop owner Michael Sandlin has imprisoned a tiger named Tony for more than a decade. We need you to send a letter to Governor Bobby Jindal to remind him that private ownership of big cats exists to protect both animals and humans.

Rhode Island: More Action Needed to Protect Wildlife from Lead!

Published 06/04/14

H. 7838, which would ban the use of toxic lead in hunting ammunition in Rhode Island, received a hearing in the Environment and Natural Resources Committee. But, if the bill does not pass before the last day—now June 20—it will be dead.

We need you to CALL the chairman of the House committee to remind him to act on this crucial bill NOW. The Chairman is Rep. Arthur Handy, and his office number is (401) 785-8996. This call will be very easy and should last about one minute. Simply say “Hi, my name is __ and I am a Rhode Island resident. I would like you to please bring H. 7838 to a committee vote immediately.”

And, after you call, you can send a follow-up message to the committee members here.

Take Action for Primates

Published 05/30/14

On May 29, Born Free USA CEO Adam M. Roberts spoke at a one-day conference in London to examine whether primates should be kept as pets in the UK.

While monetary gifts to the Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary are vital to our caring for the primates, donations of items found on the Sanctuary Wish List are a welcome addition. The monkeys particularly love these shade sails.

The Captive Primate Safety Act (H.R. 2856/S.1463) would prohibit the interstate commerce of primates in the exotic "pet" trade. Urge your U.S. representative and senators to co-sponsor this bill!

The Humane Care for Primates Act (H.R. 3556) would amend Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regulations to allow accredited sanctuaries to import primates from abroad. Tell your representative to support it here!

Beavers Killed for their Fur in Michigan? Urgent Action Needed!

Published 05/21/14

A new bill in the Michigan legislature would increase the number of people who are allowed to trap beavers in the state. It’s bad enough that trappers can be licensed to kill beavers in Michigan, but S.B. 759 would overturn a century-old prohibition by adding fur dealers to those legally authorized to slaughter beavers. This would not only increase cruel trapping incidents, but also endanger the species. Beaver populations have been imperiled in the past, and their numbers may become critically low again. Tell your Michigan state representative that you oppose S.B. 759!

Louisiana Residents: Speak Up Now for Tony the Truck Stop Tiger!

Published 05/20/14

Louisiana bans nearly all private ownership of big cats. However, a dangerous new bill in the state legislature could undermine these common-sense restrictions, so we need you to speak out now!

The bill, S.B. 250, would singularly appease Michael Sandlin, who has kept Tony the tiger isolated and on display at a truck stop in Grosse Tete, Louisiana for more than a decade.
