Representatives Mike Fitzpatrick (R-PA) and Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) have just re-introduced the Captive Primate Safety Act, H.R. 2856, which prohibits the interstate commerce of monkeys, apes, and other primates in the exotic "pet" trade. Born Free USA has long-supported this vital legislation and we need you to speak out now and urge your U.S. Representatives to co-sponsor this humane bill without delay.
Thrilling news in the fight against shark finning! Thanks to your emails and polite pressure, New York governor Andrew Cuomo signed A.1769b/S.1711b, a bill that will finally make the possession and sale of shark fins illegal in the state.
Are you sweltering this week, too? The drought at the Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary continues but our monkey residents keep cool by swimming in their ponds and napping in the shade of the mesquite trees.
Trapping is an outdated and inhumane practice, but luckily the California state legislature has passed a bill to improve euthanasia practices for trapped animals! We have an opportunity to advocate for wildlife and tell the governor to uphold the legislature's decision and sign this important law.
There is an appalling bill moving quickly through the New Jersey legislature that would expand trapping opportunities and put countless animals at risk. S2665 threatens to remove the statutory 200 permit limit for trapping beavers. It is already permissible to kill 1,000 beavers every year, which is half of New Jersey's entire beaver population! An increase in legal trapping limits is unnecessary and threatens to decimate beaver numbers in the state.
On June 20th the Nevada County Fair Board heard from concerned county residents and animal protection representatives about the dangers and cruelty inherent in elephant rides. Despite majority opposition, the board upheld its contract with Have Trunk Will Travel, an organization that has been documented mistreating elephants.
Thanks to your efforts, the Big Cats and Public Safety Protection Act (H.R. 1998) is causing quite a stir here on Capitol Hill. With 50 co-sponsors and counting, this commonsense piece of legislation is garnering much-needed attention — but we can't let up on the pressure now. We need your help to ensure that this bill receives a hearing in the House Natural Resources Committee, so please ask your U.S. representative to co-sponsor the bill today.
The Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) has launched an attack on the endangered gray wolf that threatens to decimate its slowly recovering populations. FWS has published a proposal to remove gray wolves from the list of endangered species, and we must speak out against this travesty.
