Basel — As the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) World Conservation Union Council meets today at its head office in Gland, Switzerland, a global alliance of animal protection organizations is urging IUCN President, Mr. Valli Moosa, to reverse an IUCN resolution that supports unnecessary animal cruelty.

Sacramento, CA — As Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus rolls into town on Thursday, Tom Rider, who worked with Ringling Bros. animals for two and a half years, will expose a major cover-up in which the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) exonerated Ringling Bros. from any responsibility for the death of a baby elephant. The agency cast aside ample evidence and concluding remarks from its own investigator that Ringling Bros.’ treatment of the elephant “precipitated in the physical harm and ultimate death of the animal.”
Animal Advocates Commend Governor Blagojevich’s Veto of Bill that Would Expand Use of Cruel Snares in Illinois
Springfield, IL — Animal welfare organizations, activated by more than 600,000 Illinois constituents, lobbied Governor Rod R. Blagojevich to veto House Bill 1486. Sponsored by the fur-industry lobby organization “Fur Takers of America,” HB 1486 would have allowed trappers to use wire neck snares to trap and strangle several species of fur-bearing animals. Citing humane concerns, Governor Blagojevich vetoed the bill.

Sacramento, CA — Effective today, a regulation has been enacted in Kentucky that will prohibit the future private possession of tigers, lions, monkeys, bears, venomous reptiles, and other dangerous wildlife. One of the most comprehensive restrictions on the keeping of exotic animals as “pets” in the United States, the regulation also prohibits existing animals from being bred.
