S 2651 Bans the Sale of Unweaned Birds [2006]

in Massachusetts

Bill Description: If passed, this bill would ban the sale of unweaned birds, or the commercial import of unweaned birds into the state. In addition, sellers of birds would be required to maintain (and provide to consumers) records of hatch dates, hatch location, breeder names, and the bird’s weight.
[teaserbreak] The sale of unweaned parrots and other birds raises serious animal welfare and consumer protection concerns. These animals are too young to feed themselves without assistance and, when an inexperienced person attempts to hand-feed a young parrot, tragic complications can result. This includes aspiration pneumonia, burns or punctures of the digestive tract, starvation, developmental deficiencies, and even death. This bill is designed to protect young birds from the stress and dangers of the commercial pet trade.
