Purchasers have a right to know the source of the puppies that they purchase at retail pet stores. Many pet stores continue to sell puppies supplied by commercial puppy breeders, including puppy mills. Puppy mills are breeding facilities that produce purebred puppies or trendy breed mixes in large numbers. The documented problems of puppy mills include overbreeding, inbreeding, minimal veterinary care, overcrowding of cages, poor quality of food and shelter, lack of socialization with humans, and the killing of unwanted puppies and adult animals who can no longer reproduce.
