Snow monkeys enjoying watermelons

Spring has arrived at last! The Sanctuary is beginning to turn a nice shade of green. It won’t be long before there is lush foliage in all the monkey enclosures.

Wonderful news! Maude and Elsie, the two rhesus macaques who recently arrived at our Sanctuary after years spent in a laboratory, are settling in well. They particularly enjoy picking and eating grass and other vegetation while relaxing in the spring sunshine. Both are making friends with other monkeys who live nearby and Maude has even started to groom and be groomed by a male rhesus monkey next door. Coming to our Sanctuary has made such an enormous difference to their lives. No longer kept in cages, they are able to enjoy the freedom, space, and natural environment we provide for our residents.

This week we were lucky to receive hundreds of watermelons — a firm favorite for the monkeys. We purposely try not to break them open, giving the monkeys the pleasure of doing this for themselves. After boring a hole in the melon, they reach in and eagerly scoop out handfuls of the fruit.

Until next week,

Sarah
