Maude and Elsie, the two rhesus macaques who were recently retired from the research industry, continue to do well. They are socializing with monkeys in neighboring enclosures. Elsie is the more active of the two and enjoys having a lively “discussion” with a young male snow monkey. She has also developed a strong rapport with another female macaque and it is heartwarming to watch them grooming each other.

Both Elsie and Maude are enjoying the fresh fruit and vegetables that we give to all our residents. Favorites of theirs include crunchy items such as celery, apples, sweet potatoes, and carrots. They often dip or soak their food in water before eating.
We received nectarines this week in our delivery of fresh produce. The monkeys thoroughly enjoy soft fruits such as nectarines, peaches, and plums. Once they have finished eating the flesh, they chew and crunch on the stone to get at the seed inside. The loud cracking sounds are wonderful to hear as we spread the food out for all the monkeys.
