The Sanctuary has recently become home to three more macaques, all of whom had been kept as “pets.” Their “owner” had reached the right decision that he could no longer provide them with the environment they needed and although he was upset to re-home them, he knew that he was doing the right thing for their sakes as well as his own. As is typical with monkeys kept in private homes, they were behaving aggressively toward people and showed signs of abnormal behavior. In particular, Loekey, a young male snow monkey, threw himself around and started biting his arm.

We placed Loekey in an enclosure next to Frankie and Logan. The three showed immediate interest in each other and it wasn’t long before Frankie and Loekey started to playfully grab each other through the fence that divides them. We hope this behavior will continue and that Loekey will soon be able to enjoy playing with another snow monkey.
Anna and Sissy, who lived in the same household with Loekey (who bullied them), are female long-tailed macaques. They are housed together and, although attached to each other, they have so far not shown any friendly interest in any of the other monkeys living around them. We hope that as they settle into their new life, this will start to change.
