Nine days ago the Indianapolis Colts had a home game against Houston. The halftime entertainment was a monkey riding on the back of a dog who was herding sheep.

A media report predictably embraced the stunt as cute and funny. Watch the video with a sober eye, however, and you might notice how the monkey, strapped so tightly atop the dog that he was immobile, came within inches of having his head bashed by the side of a wooden hurdle. That, or any fall and tumble by the running dog, presumably would have seriously injured or even killed the monkey.
What a cruel, stupid stunt. Shame on the Colts.

Karma didn’t respond that day because Indianapolis won. But a week later she just might have, when the Colts got clobbered in the playoffs.
Born Free USA owns and operates a primate sanctuary that’s home to more than 600 monkeys, many of whom were rescued from research labs, private possession or entertainment. I can only hope that the monkey who “entertained” Colts fans on Dec. 30 someday will be retired to a sanctuary where he can live out the rest of his life in as natural a way as possible, not strapped on the back of a running dog.
What is it with horse-nicknamed football teams? A year ago the Denver Broncos had a similar halftime show. I’m not saying they consequently deserve to lose their playoff game this coming weekend against Baltimore, but … in honor of National Bird Day I’m rooting for the Ravens.
