Washington D.C. – The winner of the third annual Born Free USA Compassionate Pet Supply Store Contest is Braxton’s Animal Works in Wayne, PA. The contest asked consumers to vote on-line and nominate their pick for the most compassionate pet supply stores.

Adam Roberts, Executive Vice President of Born Free USA said, “Increasingly, discerning consumers are taking a stand with their dollars to support good business practices. We applaud Braxton’s Animal Works for its conscientious decision not to sell live animals in their stores and therefore not contribute to the millions of animals suffering in pet stores and bred in puppy mills.”

John and Dave Braxton, owners of Braxton’s, said, “Braxton’s advocates for adoption through reputable, local, breed-specific or all-breed rescues and shelters by hosting adoptions days throughout each month and culminating in their annual Harvest Fest-Pet Rescue & Family Fun Day held each September. While Braxton’s sold puppies back in the 1940’s, the family quickly stopped selling livestock, believing that puppies are not products.”

Born Free USA, a nationally recognized leader in animal welfare and wildlife conservation, maintains a database of pet supply stores throughout the U.S. to promote compassionate retailers. The website www.PetSupplyLocator.com helps consumers find quality supplies for their companion animals from retailers that share their compassion for animals.

The criteria required to be included in the database is to not sell any live animals including birds, reptiles and fish. However, this does not preclude in-store adoptions or other promotions in coordination with animal rescue groups and shelters.

Born Free USA is a nationally recognized leader in animal welfare and wildlife conservation. Through litigation, legislation, and public education, Born Free USA leads vital campaigns against animals in entertainment, exotic “pets,” trapping and fur, and the destructive international wildlife trade.  Born Free USA brings to America the message of “compassionate conservation” — the vision of the U.K.-based Born Free Foundation, established in 1984 by Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna, stars of the iconic film Born Free, along with their son Will Travers, now CEO of both organizations. Born Free’s mission is to end suffering of wild animals in captivity, conserve threatened and endangered species, and encourage compassionate conservation globally.
