Bill Description:
This bill would end the slaughtering or selling of dogs and cats for human consumption. An amendment would also end live pigeon shoots.[teaserbreak]
Background:
Live pigeon shooting is a merciless “sport” in which shooters aim at dazed pigeons launched from boxes – when clay pigeons could easily be used instead. Gamblers earn points for every bird they shoot down within a certain range, and observers estimate that 70% of the birds are wounded but not killed outright.
Meanwhile, it is utterly shocking that the sale of dog and cat meat is still legal in Pennsylvania. Outside of Philadelphia, reports have been made and charges have been filed for people raising dogs and cats to sell for meat. Butchers must only obtain a kennel license and maintain minimum hygiene standards. There is currently nothing else law enforcement can do to stop this abhorrent practice.
