Republic of Congo Signals a Turn in Poaching Fight

Denis Sassou-Nguesso, president of the Republic of Congo, set fire to more than five tons of illegally hunted elephant tusks on Wednesday in the nation’s capital as a public condemnation of the elephant poaching crisis that has ravaged the continent’s resources. The ivory had been seized from poachers across the country. Officials are determined to keep the pressure on traffickers, both outside the government and in it, long after the ashes cool.
