DNA from Elephant Dung and Tusks Reveals Poaching Hot Spots

Scientists trying to stop poachers are tracking seized ivory back to its source. By matching its DNA to that in samples of elephant dung, they can locate the main hot spots for smuggled ivory. As the research team reports this week in the journal Science, “If the number of hot spots are as few and concentrated as our data suggest, a focus of major international law enforcement efforts on these key areas could result in significant reductions in elephant poaching.”
