For close to a decade Happy has lived alone, separated from the Bronx Zoo’s two other elephants. Her solitary existence is quite unlike the life of a wild elephant. Living in a zoo is no life for an elephant. Adam Roberts, CEO of Born Free USA, “envisions a future in which the only zoo is a rescue zoo,” he said. “It’s essentially turning these facilities into sanctuaries for animals that are in need of lifetime care, rather than animals that have been bred or imported for a lifetime of captivity.”
