As Many as 11,000 Sharks are Killed by Humans Every Hour

According to research, the number of sharks killed by human activity each year tends to be approximately 100 million—which means that approximately 11,000 sharks die each hour. Part of the problem facing sharks is the consumption of shark fin soup in Asia: a phenomenon that boomed in the 1990s with the region’s economic growth. The sharks die after their fins have been removed, even if they are released alive.
