A rhino whose face was mutilated by poachers in South Africa is getting an unusual cover for her wounds: elephant skin. Poachers recently shot the 12-year-old rhino, called Hope, at a wildlife park. They then hacked Hope’s face to pull out her horns. Veterinarians opted to cover the wounds with elephant skin—which came from a taxidermist, who obtained it from an elephant who had died from natural causes—because, given the nature of the injuries, natural materials would work better than the hard synthetic shields normally used.
