A coalition of animal protection and conservation organizations, including Born Free, has come out against Ontario’s plans to ease hunting regulations for wolves and coyotes as a conservation measure to ‘protect’ moose. According to the coalition, wolves and coyotes play important roles in their ecosystems—and, when they are killed, negative repercussions on many other species and ecosystem processes often ensue. The groups contend that humans are the real predators when it comes to protecting the province’s dwindling moose population.
