Who else was it going to be but Buddy?
When we were tasked with choosing a sixth monkey for our sanctuary’s primate “adoption” program, it was an easy decision. Five-year-old Buddy has only been with us for three-and-a-half years, but his active, playful energy quickly endeared this young male baboon to the sanctuary caretakers![teaserbreak]
Buddy was rescued in 2013, right before he was about to be sold as a “pet.” He was living in a cage in a barn, awaiting sale in the pet trade, when we were eagerly asked for help. We gladly said “yes!”
Within two days of his arrival at the sanctuary, Buddy was introduced to a young olive baboon named Elvis—and the two have become inseparable! After learning and growing together for a year, they were introduced to the “Lucky Nine”: a group of female baboons retired from research. They were also acquainted with an older ex-pet baboon, Dane, who was rescued from a basement in Wisconsin.
It’s a joy to watch as Buddy’s vibrant personality blossoms, whether he’s playing with a donated puzzle, “riding” on his large spool, or playing chase with his baboon friends.

The beginning of Buddy’s life was lonely, scary, and uncertain. If he had been sold and kept as a pet, he could be in a terrible state today. We’re so fortunate to have received the plea to rescue him and change the course of his life. We appreciate every happy moment that we’ve been able to provide for Buddy, Elvis, Dane, and the Lucky Nine, and we’re grateful that Buddy has developed more normally in the company of other baboons in a large, natural setting.
