A new study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, has found that an “ongoing sixth mass extinction” is underway, caused in large part by human activity. Rather than study extinctions, however, this paper instead looks at how animal populations are doing. Researchers found that about 30% of all land vertebrates are experiencing declines and population losses. And, in most parts of the world, mammal populations are losing 70% of their members because of habitat loss.
