This week, a federal appeals upheld Endangered Species Act protections for gray wolves in the Great Lakes region, a decision that could also impact grizzly bears and other wildlife. The appeals court stated that in delisting wolves in the Great Lakes region, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) “failed to reasonably analyze or consider” the impact of its decision on the greater population of gray wolves. Animal protection groups argue that the Department of the Interior’s recent decision to delist the population of grizzly bears in and around Yellowstone National Park operates in a similar way to the wolf delisting. The appeals court decision could, therefore, help protect the bears as well.
