Bear and wolf baiting is so widespread in Wisconsin that “of the 4,682 bears slaughtered by hunters in Wisconsin last year, 96 percent were killed using bait and/or dogs.” Baiting is problematic for a number of reasons, including the fact that laying bait for predators habituates these animals to looking to humans, and human communities, for food. Additionally, the artificial supply of food helps grow the number of predators in a region, which increases the likelihood of human/predator conflicts.
