While many exotic pets in the United States are bred for sale by breeders in-country, some animals are transported long distances from the wild. The demand for the global pet trade can have devastating impacts on both the individuals themselves, and the survival of the species to which they belong. Species such as the Asian giant softshell turtle (Pelochelys cantorii) are endangered in their natural habitat yet still traded as pets. This is just one species which has been brought to the brink of extinction thanks to our desire to hold unusual and exotic animals captive in our homes. You can help by ensuring that you do not support the sale of exotic animals as pets.
