International Women’s Day is March 8, and it marks a worldwide day to recognize and celebrate the achievements of women. At Born Free USA, talented and passionate women lead our work to ensure that all wild animals are treated with compassion and respect.

Today and every day, we celebrate our colleagues that work hard to protect animals. This International Women’s Day, learn more about some of the women that guide Born Free USA’s work.


Liz Tyson, PhD – Director of Animal Welfare and Advocacy

Leading Compassionate Care for Individual Animals and Entire Species Alike

Dr. Liz TysonAs the Director of Animal Welfare and Advocacy, Liz Tyson acts as the director of the Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary as well as the campaigns director, leading investigative, legislative, and public education efforts to protect wildlife. Liz’s passion for animal welfare has taken her around the world – she has worked in the UK, Colombia, Spain, Palestine, Bolivia, Ethiopia, Peru, and now Texas. An expert on animal welfare legal protections, Liz leads efforts to compile research and publish reports on topics ranging from wildlife captivity to zoonotic disease. Her drive and passionate spirit unify and encourages the team at the sanctuary in their tireless care of hundreds of rescued monkeys. Liz’s leadership at Born Free inspires each member of the team, leading by example and always moving swiftly and with intention to find solutions.


Gita Matlock – Chief Development Officer

Developing Widespread Support for Born Free USA’s Work

Gita MatlockGita joined Born Free USA in 2023. As the first Chief Development Officer of Born Free USA, she brings invaluable fundraising and leadership expertise to propel us forward. She is a dedicated animal advocate with a particular passion for horses. Her fearless and positive outlook motivate the development team in their mission to support Born Free USA’s lifesaving work for animals. Under her leadership the team has reached unprecedented milestones in their fundraising for wildlife.


Alice Stroud – Director of Global Conservation Programs

Building Critical Partnerships to Save Wildlife

Alice StroudAlice Stroud is Born Free USA’s Director of Global Conservation Programs. A lawyer with decades of experience in leading Africa-based capacity building programs, Alice drives Born Free USA’s efforts to combat wildlife trafficking and strengthen biodiversity conservation in West Africa by cultivating critical partnerships with regional governments and other stakeholders. Through these partnerships, she ensures that Born Free USA’s work in West Africa is responsive to local needs and priorities and is truly collaborative with individuals throughout the wildlife law enforcement chain, from customs officers to judges and prosecutors and members of government.
