Celebrate International Women’s Day with Born Free!

by Angela Grimes in Blog

March 8 is International Women’s Day – a global day celebrating the achievements of women. At Born Free USA, talented and passionate women lead our work to ensure that all wild animals are treated with compassion and respect.

Today and every day, we celebrate our colleagues that work hard to protect animals. This International Women’s Day, learn more about some of the women that guide Born Free USA’s work.

Dr. Katie Johnson-Jennings, Staff Veterinarian

Dr. Katie Johnson-JenningsDr. Johnson-Jennings has worked to deliver outstanding healthcare to the monkeys at our sanctuary for more than eight years. During that time, she has gone from being a recent graduate with the drive and passion to make a difference for wildlife, to one of the foremost primate vets in the U.S. sanctuary community. A skilled mentor, not only does Katie ensure our monkeys receive the best possible care, she also works to share her knowledge with our wider team, equipping them to be better caregivers. Her patience, kindness, and compassion toward both humans and animals only serve to enhance her impressive skill and experience. On International Women’s Day, we celebrate Katie.

Kyliegh Viano, Lead Primate Caregiver

Kyliegh Viano, Primate Caregiver

Kyliegh joined our team in 2021, and since that time, has become one of the most important people in the monkeys’ lives, alongside our wider expert caregiver team. Affectionately referred to as “a monkey whisperer,” Kyliegh’s commitment to the monkeys, and her thoughtful, professional, and compassionate approach to their care exemplifies her dedication. Particularly at home caring for our 129 Japanese macaques, Kyliegh has made it her mission to understand each of their individual needs and ensure they are met. This International Women’s Day, we celebrate Kyliegh.

Devan Schowe, Campaigns Associate

Devan SchoweBefore taking on her current role, Devan worked as Lead Caregiver at our primate sanctuary. Equally at home working in the extreme Texas weather caring for the monkeys as she is producing outstanding research to support our campaigns for animals, Devan’s talent shines through in all she does. Supporters of Born Free will be familiar with Devan’s work as she has been responsible for some of our most impactful resources since 2021. With seemingly boundless energy and passion for her work, this International Women’s Day, we celebrate Devan.
