Click to see construction photos.Spring has arrived in all its glory, and with recent drought-quenching rains the sanctuary is busy with the colors and sounds of nature — and construction.
Work has begun in earnest as we prepare for the arrival of the primates from the bankrupt Wild Animal Orphanage in nearby San Antonio. More than 100 monkeys and one baboon soon will be transferred to their new home in south Texas.

The USDA contracted with an experienced primate veterinarian to perform all the pre-release veterinary work, which included health checks, identification, sterilization and vaccination. This was a huge undertaking but we’re happy to report that all went well thanks to the professional and compassionate veterinary care and the assistance from the two WAO animal caretakers who know these animals so well.
Texas Purple Sage Services has started construction on the first of two four-pack enclosures that will house the rescued primates. Each section of the four-pack will contain over 10,000 square feet with trees, grass, climbing structures, safety areas, a swimming tank and wide-open skies above.
The hard-working crew is making great progress and if all goes well we may receive our first group of macaques in three to four weeks. We’re very excited, and though there’s a tremendous amount of work to be done we’re looking forward to the day when the rescued monkeys explore their new surroundings for the first time.
It’s no small endeavor to take on the placement of more than 100 primates, but we know we can count on your continued support to help us make sure these lucky animals have the best captive life possible.
