Thirty years after founding Born Free, Virginia McKenna returns to Kenya to ensure that Elsa the lion’s spirit lives on. In Kenya, McKenna oversees a new anti-poaching initiative by the Kenyan Wildlife Service. “Today, there are only 50 lions in Meru,” she said. “In Elsa’s day, there were hundreds. There are just 2,000 in Kenya, and only 25,000 across all of Africa. Soon, if we cannot save them, lions will have disappeared from Africa altogether.”
