Can Captive Dolphins Return to the Wild?

in Animal News

Off of Turkey’s southwest coast, two wild-captured bottlenose dolphins, Tom and Misha, were kept in a filthy, inadequate pen so that tourists could pay to interact with them. Amid fears that the dolphins would soon die, Born Free Foundation stepped in and took possession of Tom and Misha. After extensive rehabilitation, the dolphins have been released to the Aegean Sea. Born Free and all those involved had proved that even dolphins who had suffered greatly in captivity could be taught what they needed to know to live wild again. “We realized that there were very few options for them, and they were likely to die unless somebody did something,” said Will Travers, Born Free’s president.
