A new company is engineering a synthetic rhino horn that could be indistinguishable from the natural kind. The company, Pembient, seeks to flood the black market with synthetic rhino horn, thereby driving down the price of rhino horn and removing the incentive to poach rhinos in the wild. However, conservationists worry that flooding the market with fake horns may inadvertently drive up the price of genuine rhino horn, reinforce the false notion that rhino horn holds medicinal benefits, and detract from proven anti-poaching strategies.
