Endangered Elephant Poisoned for Ivory

in Animal News

An elephant named Yongki was famous across Indonesia for helping to protect endangered elephant habitats. The 34-year-old Sumatran elephant patrolled the jungles of a national park on the island of Sumatra on anti-poaching missions, and helped calm potentially dangerous wild elephants threatening to stampede. But, on September 18, Yongki was found dead with his tusks cut off, likely by a chainsaw. Initial test results indicate that Yongki was poisoned. No trace of the perpetrators has been found.
