Legal but Clandestine Exotic Animal Trade Thrives in Missouri

Four times per year, a rural Missouri exotic animal sale draws crowds from across the country. The heavily criticized auction has received national attention, but its continued operations indicate that the exotic animal trade is still flourishing in Missouri. “Some states have very strict laws about the keeping of exotic pets,” said Adam M. Roberts, CEO of Born Free USA and Born Free Foundation. “Some states, a small minority, have really lax laws or no laws at all… Historically, Missouri is one of the sort of bad states—to put it mildly—in terms of its laws regarding exotic animal ownership.”
