The formation of a new wolf pack in California—which includes four pups—is a testament to the effectiveness and ongoing importance of the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Wolves were granted federal protection under the ESA in 1974. These protections halted state wolf hunting and trapping seasons, allowing populations to recover, in California as well as in other states. Now, at a time when the ESA is increasingly under attack in Congress, it is important to remember how effective this landmark legislation has been for the animals and ecosystems it protects.
