Born Free USA works to ensure that all wild animals, whether living in captivity or in the wild, are treated with compassion and respect. We work across the world to preserve and protect wildlife in its natural habitat – finding Compassionate Conservation solutions so that humans and wildlife can co-exist peacefully. #KeepWildlifeInTheWild
Campaigns
Our campaign areas are: Animals in Captivity, Trapping, Fur Trade, the Endangered Species Act, Wildlife Trade, Coexisting with Wildlife, and the Global Nature Recovery Investment Initiative.
Primate Sanctuary
Born Free also operates a 175-acre primate sanctuary in south Texas. One of the largest primate sanctuaries in the United States, the sanctuary provides a safe, permanent home to monkeys, many rescued from abuse in roadside zoos or as pets in private homes or retired from animal experimentation. Our mission at the sanctuary is to provide monkeys as high a quality of life as we can. Currently, there are 11 species of monkey at the primate sanctuary: bonnet macaque, long-tailed macaque, pig-tailed macaque, rhesus macaque, stump-tailed macaque, Japanese macaque, olive baboon, hamadryas baboon, Guinea baboon, African vervet, and tantalus monkey.
Animal Databases
Born Free maintains two animal databases:
Non-Target Trapping Incidents Database: This database catalogs non-target trapping incidents in the U.S. involving dogs, cats, endangered species, and even humans who fall victims to traps.
Captive Exotic Animals Incidents Database: This database catalogs attacks on humans, attacks on other animals, and escapes by exotic animals in the U.S.
