Gray wolves are critically important to their environment and were once one of the most widely distributed wild mammals, inhabiting most of the available land in the northern hemisphere. However, because of persecution by humans and destruction of their habitat, this iconic species was brought to the brink of extinction. Efforts to increase their numbers have been successful, but gray wolves in four of the lower 48 states lack federal protections and face threats due to trophy hunting, trapping, and continued human encroachment on their land.
