Chelmsford, MA
CHELMSFORD, MA – A mother skunk was found trapped in a leghold trap on the Chelmsford-Lowell line in Chelmsford, Massachusetts. Such traps are illegal in Massachusetts. The skunk displayed severe open wounds. She was also a nursing mother separated from her babies. A resident called the incident in, saying that they had seen an injured skunk struggling from 5 a.m. through the morning. Animal control was unable to get the the trap off — it was too old and rusted. Newhouse Wildlife Rescue, a home-run wildlife rehab facility operated by volunteers, responded to the incident to free the skunk, who was then taken to the rehab facility to receive veterinary care. A few days later, Lowell Animal Control officers located the skunk babies. They were dehydrated and lethargic, but they were stabilized upon arrival and reunited with their mother in the morning.
