Skunk Mama Rescued From Illegal Trap
Summary:
CHELMSFORD, MA – A mother skunk was found trapped in a leghold trap on the Chelmsford-Lowell line in Chelmsford, Massachusetts. Such traps are illegal in Massachusetts. The skunk displayed severe open wounds. She was also a nursing mother separated from her babies. A resident called the incident in, saying that they had seen an injured skunk struggling from 5 a.m. through the morning. Animal control was unable to get the the trap off — it was too old and rusted. Newhouse Wildlife Rescue, a home-run wildlife rehab facility operated by volunteers, responded to the incident to free the skunk, who was then taken to the rehab facility to receive veterinary care. A few days later, Lowell Animal Control officers located the skunk babies. They were dehydrated and lethargic, but they were stabilized upon arrival and reunited with their mother in the morning.
Result:
The man who set the traps was charged by police for setting several illegal traps in his yard.
